The Cell Cycle
Interphase
"Resting" phase
Cell grows and carries out normal cellular processes
Replicates DNA and cellular organelles to prepare for division
Three Stages of Interphase
G1 Stage - Cell grows in size
S Stage - "synthesis" stage where DNA is replicated
G2 Stage - Cell prepares for mitosis by replicating organelles
Mitosis
Prophase
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes
Centrioles separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
Spindle fibers begin to form
Nuclear envelope breaks down, releasing chromosomes into the cytoplasm
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up across the center of the cell
Spindle fibers connect to the centromeres of each chromosome
Anaphase
Centromeres split
Sister chromatids seperate into individual chromosomes
Spindle fibers pull sister chromatids to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase
Chromosomes gather at opposites sides of the cell
Nuclear envelops reform around the two groups of chromosomes
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm divides and pinches in half
Mitosis is completed resulting in two new daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell
